Michael Maddess and the Action Asia Events Team caught up with Daniel.

Q1. What got you into running?

My whole family is into running so they took me to harriers from a young age.

我家人很喜歡跑步,小時候他們已經帶我參加越野跑。

 

Q2. What is your definition of trail running or Skyrunning?

Racing on a good technical single track

Q2. 對你而言,越野賽或天空跑的定義是什麼?

在難度高的單線行山徑上比賽。

 

Q3. What are the differences between racing in Asia and your home country?

Different food, climate, and elevation when racing in the high mountains.

Q3. 你認為在亞洲和在紐西蘭比賽的不同之處是甚麼?

其實亞洲的食物、氣候和比賽的海拔都與紐西蘭很不同。

 

Q4. What motivates you to keep up training when you encounter difficulties?

Thinking ahead to the next race and training better than my (previous) competition.
Q4. 當你感覺累的時候, 是甚麼令你保持動力繼續訓練?

我會未雨綢繆,準備好下一場賽事,更努力的鍛練,以突破自己過往的紀錄為目標。

 

Q5. Have you ever had a running coach and what did you learn from them? Which teammate or coach has taught you the most over your career?

I studied and ran for two Universities in USA, (Eastern Kentucky University, and Sam Houston State University). Both my coaches at these universities helped develop my running and increased my speed.

Q5. 你有跟隨過教練學習如何跑越野賽嗎?有哪位教練或隊友激勵你邁向跑步生涯的高峰嗎?
我在美國唸大學時已經開始學習跑步,並代表過兩所大學出賽。當時那兩位跑步教練對提升我的跑速及整個跑步生涯都有很大的幫助。

 

Q6. What are your personal and/or team goals for the year?

To compete well as a team in a race in mainland China in September. Travel to Hong Kong and race highly competitively in the Lantau 2 Peaks race. Then travel to Brazil to compete with the New Zealand team and hopefully achieve a win there. Then race another big trail race at the end of the year.

Q6. 你今年的個人和團體目標是甚麼?

在九月中旬,我希望能以組別的形式在中國內地的一場比賽中比出好成績。之後會到香港參加競爭激烈的Lantau 2 Peaks,再到巴西作為紐西蘭隊的一員比賽,希望也可以在那裡取得勝利。最後年底還會參加一場大型越野跑賽事。

 

Q7. As you do so many big long distance races (and in the mountains!!) how do you prepare to combat the challenges of injury that humble some of the best runners each year?

I also compete in multisport and adventure racing so I get a good balance of x training with cycling and kayaking as well as running.

Q7. 平日你參與這麼多長途和山路賽事,你有沒有擔心過因為參賽而受傷呢?

我平日不單會參加越野賽,還會參與不同類型的運動比賽和練習,如划艇及踩單車,以讓身體各部份都取得適當的鍛鍊。

 

Q8. What is your typical race day routine? Do you have any prerace superstitions?

Depends on race, but usually have a decent breakfast and last minute organisation. No prerace superstitions but I don't like to shower the morning of the race and just relaxing, possibly watching a bit of sport or a movie on TV the night before the race.

Q8. 一般而言,你比賽日的行程是怎樣呢?你有沒有什麼賽前迷信
視乎比賽,但通常我都會吃個不錯的早餐,以及作出發前的最後準備。我沒有特別的「賽前迷信」,但我習慣不在比賽日的早上洗澡。反而我會盡量放鬆自己,例如在比賽前的晚上看看體育節目或電影。

 

Q9. What's the farthest you've ever run at one time?

In the 100km ultra, although there was a bit of walking in that race due to the hills and altitude.

我跑過一百公里!不過那次因為高海拔和陡峭的山路而走了一少段路。

 

Q10. What is the one moment in your career that you are most proud of?

First place finish in the two person team section with my father at the Speights Coast to Coast and also the second place finish at 100km ultramarathon in Zhangye China.

Q10. 在你的跑步生涯中,有哪件事讓你最自豪嗎?

最自豪的是我和爸爸以組合形式參與the Speights Coast to Coast比賽,並得第一名。另一次是我在中國100公里超級馬拉松中取得第二名。

Q12. Ever injured? Which kind and how serious?

Yes. Achilles injury and tight ITB on my hip both took a couple months to recover.

是的。跟腱損傷和髂脛束症候群。這兩次受傷后我都休整了幾個月才恢復。

 

Q13. Hot or cold weather runner? Morning or evening runs?

Hot weather as not a fan of the cold. Evening runs

Q13.喜歡在較熱的天氣還是較冷的天氣跑步?喜歡在早上還是傍晚跑步?

喜歡在較熱的天氣跑步多一點,因為不喜歡寒冷。習慣傍晚跑。

 

Q14. Best part of running:

Eating junk food without putting on too much weight.

吃垃圾食品體重也不會增加太多。

Mountain bike and take part in other sports

Q18. How many days after a marathon do you usually start running again?

After 3 days or whenever the legs come alright

Q18. 在馬拉松比賽後你會休息多久才繼續練習呢?

比賽後三天,或當我的腿休息夠了。

 

Q19. Any other comments to encourage ultra-runners to go the distance? Or just motivation advice to beginners?

Runners should trust in their training when on the start line and during the race stay on top of nutrition.

Q19. 你可以鼓勵一下將要比賽的選手嗎?有沒有特別的建議給新手呢?

由踏上起跑線,跑手們就應該對自己有信心,相信平日的訓練。在比賽期間應保持充分的營養。
