Double Cove Waterfest off to a beautiful start

Wu Kai Sha coastline raved by Waterfest participants

HONG KONG, 2 August 2015 – With the fastest Kayak and Run selling out in a record 3 days the Double Cove WATERFEST Kayak n Run proved to be popular with extra categories added in the beautiful Wu Kai Sha area of Sai Kung with the 2nd kayak n run category selling out a week later. Majority of all teams gave the Double Cove event a big thumbs up in terms of beauty.

A father and son team paddled and ran to victory in the first adult category race finishing in blistering 1 hour 3 minutes 43 seconds. “We joined many Action Asia Events races, but loved this Double Cove kayak and run race the best especially at this breath-taking venue because we live nearby and our whole family is here today relaxing on this calm beach,” said 58-year-old Kwok Wah Wong. Wong’s son and also teammate, 34-year-old Gump Wong continued, “We really cherished the whole experience and appreciate the race organization’s effort of conducting the rare Kayak n Run races in Hong Kong especially here at Wu Kai Sha. Not only because my father and I finally got a chance to race together, but having my wife and my son here to support us really brought us extra joy. We swim every day from the beautiful Ferry Pier to the stunning Wu Kai Sha beach and run back home taking in one of the most attractive sceneries in Hong Kong as our training routine so that we have the advantage of knowing the course very well. We know Action Asia Events’ races are all quite popular so we always try to register as fast as we can to secure the spots,” said Gump Wong of team Nasty.

Just 52 seconds later arriving at finish came Chinese team 01 with Renggui Cai (Coach Cai) and Fengchun Li who came from Shenzhen to join the event.  “We managed to get our whole team to join the race today which is the highlight of our life during the last few months’ training and of course today. A large group of us trained kayaking and running together at least once every week for the last 2 months. Racing in such a gorgeous area has brought all of us the unforgettable experience as this area of Sai Kung is stunning with Ma On Shan behind Double Cove,” said Renggui Cai, winner of the Mixed Team category and the overall first runner. Fengchun Li, Cai’s student and also partner of today’s race continued, “I’ve been training with my coach (Renggui Cai) for one and half years now. Today I tried my best to keep up with him especially at the kayaking part, because the running part was for sure our strength. I’m still very excited about our result, because it was faster than we thought it would be and at the last part of the course, we surpassed team Jennifer Cheung & Dino Tsang who were ahead us for the most of the race, who probably were drained at the end. Both of us enjoyed the whole race so much!”

Local team Jennifer Cheung & Dino Tsang grabbed the 2nd place in the mixed team category finishing in 1 hour 6 minutes.  “I’ll turn forty two in two days so finishing the race so fast was the best birthday gift for me,” said Jennifer Cheung.  “I run 4-5 times every week to train for the race. It was very challenging for me because I was really pushing my limit by kayaking and running in the same race. I prefer the kayaking more because it was slightly cooler and the scenery along the coastline was very nice and memorable. My teammate Jennifer and I almost accidently smashed our paddles so we are very pleased with the result,” said Tsang after the race.

The top women’s team was team Bonnie Lai & Lam Wai Yu with Wai Yu Lam and Bonnie Lai (Wai Kwan Lai) who finished in 1 hour and 12 minutes. “In June we raced in another kayak n run race that Action Asia Events conducted and we loved today’s course more because the course has less elevation in total than the previous one so we had a better performance today,” said Lai. “Kayak n run race is our favorite kind because for us it was not as tiring as pure running or kayaking race and it was also more challenging and fun. Moreover, we will never forgot how we ran with a little breeze along the coastline and kayaked in the beautiful and calm water today with the mountains in the background,” said Lam, Lai’s colleague and today’s teammate.

Team Repulse Bay Dragon of father and son enjoyed a fun race in the Family fun kayak n run category (2k kayak & 3k run) with some memorable moments. "The second that we crossed the finish line was the most memorable moment today, comparing to the last kayak n run race we did 3 years ago as a beautiful long kayak course, the biggest challenge was against the current for quite a while and we haven't kayaked since last race 3 yrs ago," said 46-year-old Christophe Lee. “I injured my foot playing soccer so it was not my best performance, but I'm still excited and happy about our result," said Olivier Lee, Lee’s 12-year-old son. They came second in the FUN Family kayak n run category finishing in 43 minutes 28 seconds.

“I trained every day for a whole month for this race. I’m utterly thrilled that I won the race! Running on beach was the most fun but also the most challenging part of the race because it was not easy for me to run with sand in my shoes,” said Waihei Ng, the 16 year old secondary school student and the winner of the Fun Run category.

Action Asia Events’ next race is a 50 km race in September in Taiwan. Get in now as it’s filling up fast.

The event could not happen without the generous support of DOUBLE COVE the presenting sponsor and the supporting partners Action X Store, OtterBox, CamelBak, Salonpas, Gatorade, Socam, OL&N, Pearl’s, Herbalgy Touch, Julbo, Hoka One One, Action Asia Foundation and the kind support from the Hong Kong Marine Police, HK Police Force, Lands Department and St Johns Ambulance.
