Uglow paddles to victory at Royale International

Uglow paddles to victory at Royale International

July 11, 2015, Hong Kong – After 4 km of ocean kayaking in Tai Tam Bay, 6 km mountain trail running over Dragon’s Back in Shek O Country Park, 2 km ocean kayaking back to Tai Tam Tuk, team Uglow with Frenchman duo of Adrien Choux and Jerome Laboulais paddled to victory at the final leg of the Royale International Kayak n Run series at Tai Tam Bay in the blistering time of 1 hour 42 minutes 39 seconds with record hot temperatures reaching 33 degrees. Team 2XU grabbed second in 1 hour 44 minutes 55 seconds with team Invader 1 hour 47 minutes 12 seconds rounding the podium.

"It was cool that we finished first in the kayak and we got overtaken going up to CP3 by Dragon’s Back. As it was orienteering the other took took a different way and we arrived at the next checkpoint in the lead and back to the kayak cp on the beach and pushed hard on the kayak to hold on to the lead with Adrien doing a great job. I trained quite often recently so I was sort of pushing him maybe even a little too hard on the kayak parts. The weather was hot for Adrien, but we have raced in worse weather for sure. We loved the race and thanks to our sponsor Uglow who helped us," said Jerome Laboulais. “On the way up to CP3 on the hill I was getting tired, we got overtaken on the steep hill and I said to myself, oh my god this is going to be a long race” definitely the toughest part of the race for me” said Adrien Choux of winning team Uglow who collected 2 video cameras as prizes together with Ocean Potion gifts.

Just over 2 minutes later arriving at the finish came team 2XU with Russian Olya Korzh and local Hong Kong runner Tsang Chun Kit (Ying Ying) grabbed 1st in the mixed team category and second overall finishing in 1 hour 44 minutes 55 seconds. "I enjoyed the race a lot because I got to race with my good friend. We will definitely try to get the overall trophy in the next race," said Korzh. "Last time I competed in the Tai Tam race with another friend, but I felt better this time, because even if the route is slightly different, I still know the course which helped. Olya and I did study the route before the race and had good team tactics,” said Tsang.

“It's all thanks to Jeremy that we managed to get the third place. Unlike him I didn't check out the route so he ran and knew the race course already and I was counting on him during the race,” said Tristan Fairbairn of team Invader on the third place overall team. "Competing in races is a bit like my job because you never know what would happen. All you can do is to be prepared and make sure everything is ok and then you try to enjoy a good race. Today's race was nice. I really liked it because it's longer and the weather was not as hot as I thought it would be," concluded Jeremy who finished third with his teammate Tristan in 1 hour 47 minutes 12 seconds.

The top women’s team was team LL with Lam Lai Po and Dennex Lui Lai Han who finished in 2 hours 5 minutes 26 seconds. “I liked the whole series. I was especially excited about the shorter kayak part. It was our first time racing in Tai Tam Bay so it took us a while to find each check point, but other than that the whole race was very smooth for our team,” said Lui.

"We had tons of fun. My son James and I hadn't even tried kayaking before and we are definitely coming back to more races like this," said first timer David Fung of team David’s famil in the family category that kicked off the event. "Our friends encouraged my son and husband to join the race with them for the very first time and I'm excited for them. Very glad that we came. I did not worry about their safety because they all have to have safety vest on during the race together with safety boats and I'm sure my husband watched out for James," said Polly Ng who is David’s wife.

Team Mito with Oscar and May Kwok finished the whole Royale International Kayak n Run series and won the last race. "This race is the most exciting one because of the longer distance and the difficult up-hills," said Oscar. Oscar Kwok’s daughter May continued, "We had not tried to run on rocky trails before so I think it was the most difficult part. We are going to take a midnight flight to travel in Japan, but we will be back before the next Double Cove kayak and run. My dad has also signed up already!”

The Royale International Kayak n Run series final leg at Tai Tam Bay started with a kayak start at Tai Tam Tuk for a 4 km ocean kayak leg out to Windy Gap and then paddling to To Tei Wan before running over different check points passing Shek O Peak 284m in elevation on Dragons Back, Shek O Country Park which for some was over 6 km, before the final 2 km ocean kayak back to Tai Tam Bay. The last kayak n run race this year held by Action Asia Events - Double Cove Waterfest Kayak n Run will be on August 2nd.

The event could not happened without the generous support of the presenting sponsor Royale International Group and the supporting partners like ActionX Store, Otterbox, Ocean Potion, Salonpas, Gatorade, Herbalgy, Pearl’s, OL&N, Socam, Oregon Scientific, and  Action Asia Foundation.
