HK Representatives getting ready for 2018 Skyrunning World Championship

MSIG Action Asia Development Programme

To encourage, and practically develop local trail runners, MSIG and Action Asia have launched the MSIG Action Asia Development Programme.

Started in March, two Hong Kong representatives - David Ng and Karen Cheung have been training hard for the 2018 Skyrunning World Championship. Following the MSIG Action Asia Development Programme (Programme) and with the great help from the Programme partner Joint Dynamics, both Ng and Cheung have made huge progress towards their goal.

Karen Cheung (Cheung Man-yee)

Being an Orthopaedic doctor with a packed schedule, Karen can only hit the trails on weekends but by following the Programme, she gradually increased her training mileage from the only minimum to 50km per week.

Karen Cheung started the intensive training in March with 20km weekly trail running. She finished March with a 100k race as part of the training. Then in April, her training has been increased to 40km trail running per week. In May, Cheung started to attend the weekly body movement class coached by Exercise Physiologist Geoffrey Bland at Joint Dynamics and added another 10km to her weekly training target making it 50km per week.

Karen Cheung is pleased with her progress and was excited to share the experience over the past few months. “Every Wednesday, I would take the body movement class at Joint Dynamics to improve my muscle strength and balance ability. After few weeks, I noticed that my balance skill has been enhanced. Before the classes, it was quite common for me to twist my ankle and now the injuries had gone down and my stamina is getting better at the same time,” said Cheung.

After work, she would train her uphill running at the Mount Parker and on day offs, she would train in Sai Kung and Lantau Island. “Having the ability to manage different terrains and trail conditions is my training goal for the 2018 Skyrunning World Championship,” Cheung shared.

David Ng (Ng Wai-hei)

As a tertiary student, David Ng’s training schedule has been more aggressive. Ng’s recent training is a combination of weekly 60km trail running that usually carried out in Tai Mo Shan and Ma On Shan district with around 3 middle to long distance trail running races per month.

Starting in May, David Ng also takes weekly body movement class every Wednesday / Thursday with coached by Exercise Physiologist Geoffrey Bland at Joint Dynamics.

With a less meat and more vegetable meal plan, Ng’s training schedule is on track. “My leg strength has been increased since the body movement class started. I was coached to use various parts of leg muscles for enhancing uphill running skill. I think my general physical fitness performance has definitely been improved,” said David Ng, the 19-year-old Hong Kong trail running rising star.

Stay tuned to hear more on David Ng and Karen Cheung’s training towards Scotland in September.

Sponsored by global general insurer MSIG Insurance (Hong Kong) Limited, the MSIG Action Asia Development Programme is the first of its kind for local Hong Kong trail runners. To qualify for the programme, runners need to be Hong Kong-born and must participate in at least two 50-kilometer races in the 2017/18 MSIG HK50 Series.
