Local promising teenager Ng Wai Hei wins Bonaqua C3fit Action SPRINT final race

Bonaqua C3fit Action SPRINT Trail Series 2018 – Discovery Bay

HONG KONG, Saturday, May 19, 2018 – Bonaqua C3fit Action SPRINT Trail Series 2018 final leg was successfully held on May 19 (Saturday) with a 12 km course in stunning Discovery Bay. Hong Kong trail running rising star Ng Wai Hei took the top of the podium in 1 hour 15 minutes 23 seconds while Zein Williams grabbed the female champion in 1 hour 29 minutes 28 seconds.

After battling with Jeanlouis Lafayeedney (1:24:24) throughout the whole course, 19-year-old Ng Wai Hei (1:15:23), the promising Hong Kong trail runner won the overall champion of the Bonaqua C3fit Action SPRINT Trail Series 2018 – Discovery Bay.  Ng was also the male winner of 2017-2018 MSIG Action Asia Development program and was given the opportunity to represent Hong Kong to compete in the World Skyrunning Championship in Scotland.

Ng joined this short distance race to train for his speed. “I really liked the course and I think it’s very special and my favorite part was running along the coastline which you don’t see much at other races. I also enjoyed the uphill to the top of the mountain as the scenery was stunning there as well,” said Ng. Speaking of the result, he was very excited, “I’m very satisfied with my result and winning the race. My time was faster than I expected too.”

9 minutes after Ng Wai Hei, Jeanlouis Lafayeedney from France grabbed the overall second place (1:24:24). “The race was very well organized, and it was a wonderful race. Next year everyone should all come down to participate. The course was tough, but it was a lot of fun and the scenery was lovely. People were passing each other the whole time and you also see a lot of photographers which was also very encouraging,” he continued to share his fond of Discovery Bay as a Discovery Bay resident, “It is Discovery Bay so everyone would love to have lunch here after the race.”

Although it was French runner Maxime Le Bras’ first-time racing at Bonaqua C3fit Action SPRINT Trail Series – Discovery Bay, Maxime Le Bras came in third in 1 hour 29 minutes 5 seconds, “I feel good and the course was tough at the beginning especially the uphill. Then I really enjoyed the downhill, the short time into the water. It was really fun and I would definitely recommend this race to my friends,” Le Bras shared that he got into trail running 5 years ago, “It was mainly because I got bored in hiking and I also always had the urge to run the downhills so naturally, I started trail running,” he said.

Zein Williams, a mother of five, who took countless podium spots at Action Sprint Trail Series in the past 15 years, returned to Sprint Discovery Bay today and swept the female champion (1:29:28). Zein Williams said: “I was surprised as I thought it would be very hot but we were in the shade along the way going up, so the only heat that I found really unbearable was on the top. Then we went down to the beach, so we cooled down a little bit and we were able to have a little bit more for the last kilometer. The best was the top of Tiger’s Head, I loved the view very much and it was windy out there.”

24-year-old Hong Kong runner Mei Yan Wong won the women’s second place (1:43:52). It was Wong’s first-time racing at the Bonaqua C3fit Action SPRINT Trail Series 2018 – Discovery Bay. “It was really hot today, but in the last section of the race when running along the beach it was very cool and comfortable. I felt amazed when I went up to Tiger’s Head and overlooked the whole panoramic scenery of Lantau. I would highly recommend my friends to come to participate in this race, it was so fun and I hope to challenge a longer course next time.”

Women’s third place was taken by another local runner Shuk Nga Chan (1:53:51). “I tried road running only two weeks ago. I really loved going downhill after Tiger’s Head. The scenery along the road was very beautiful. I began trail running just a year ago and I always loved hiking as it can help me relax from the pressure of work. I look forward to hiking on weekends all the time. I think the most challenging element of today’s race was the weather as it was very hot.”

The 12km race course mainly consists of beach run, trail route and flat road. Participants started at the Discovery Bay Plaza with 400m beach run, then into Discovery Bay Road and Discovery Valley Road before hiking up to Lo Fu Tau. After that, down to reservoir and continue to Cheung Sha Lan and Nim Shue Wan Tsuen back to finish line.
