MAPS

  • UPLOADED ON LEFT OF THIS PAGE IN DOWNLOAD Area
  • Course marking - this is an orienteering event so you must download the attached map in download pdf section and put it in a ziplock or laminate it and bring with you. Quite easy to find the mountain cp in adult category, but recommend all in adult category to try to go out and recce the cp if you are not familiar with area.

Time

  • Average Time Expected - 2 to 3 hours (Adult) and 1 hour (Family)
  • Previous Winners - Please click result page

Adult race course route

  • Print out map uploaded at bottom of Kayak n Run page and laminate it or put in zip lock bag. NO maps given out race morning so don’t forget. Map holder recommended with string to go around your neck.
  • This is an orienteering race where your team travels in cp order the fastest way your team decides. Team members must arrive together at each cp before proceeding and must stay together (within 50m) at all times on course.
  • Check points (cps) must be done in order (cp1, cp2, cp3, cp4, cp5 and then finish).
  • When going to CP1 DO NOT go close to the coastline as BIG WAVES 200 meters before arriving so stay out wide when going around last corner. Last year 3 teams got pushed into rocks. At CP1 both team members will have to jump out, run 50m to timekeeper and return to kayaks to go to CP2. When finished all cps and going to the finish, please head towards the large pier where you started and exit up the stairs as we have to wash the kayaks in this location by the carpark.
  • Water at cp2 & cp5 by To Tei Wan beach by your kayaks.
  • ANY TEAMS WHO TAKE THE WRONG KAYAK WILL BE DISQUALIFIED.
  • We had a situation last 2 races where some team took another teams kayak and they didn't even notice that there were special water bottles with teams food/bars in the boat which was specially prepared for the teams last kayak section. This will not be tolerated and we urge you to please take the time and double check the number on the front of the kayak to make sure it matches your race number. No excuses. You will be disqualified. You will get a plastic race number at registration and must put this in the front of your kayak facing upwards for easy identification. The kayak bottle holder is the best place to put this.
  • Road crossing danger - We've decided to add a rule for safety concerns that you can ONLY CROSS Shek O ROAD but NOT RUN ALONG Shek O road as there is no sidewalk in many locations and very narrow with buses/mini-buses almost against the wall which means you could get killed so please stay off the road unless you are going straight across from a trail to another trail within 75m of junction. Any teams caught violating this will be disqualified, as we don't have police permission to run down cement road.
  • See photos for reference on website of cps.

Family category course route

  • 2km kayak & 4km run (run more like 3.6km)
  • After kayak section please exit by road where there is a driveway in front of scout centre that will be the same location that you enter with kayaks as the easiest for organizers to launch kayaks and bring kayaks out. Finish is at the far pier where the adult category will start / finish by the race pack pick up in front of the water pump station.

Passing on course – The correct way

  • If you must pass someone please yell, “passing on your left” or “passing on your right”. If someone is passing you please be considerate and let them overtake you. No pushing and shoving please.

Sunscreen and Clothing

  • Recommend strong sun block lotion, as you will burn on the water in any kind of weather. Quick dry shirt and if you have lightweight fast drying shorts preferred. Normal running shorts are fine, but recommend something a little thicker in the bum area for more comfortable seating in the kayaks. It comes down to what you find comfortable.

Where to buy food after the race

  • Not much in this neighborhood. There is a water-ski place 500m down the road that has a place selling drinks and possibly noodles, but all the good restaurants are at Stanley which is 10 minutes away by bus.
