Fournier & Vadovicova King and Queen CBRE Lantau 2 Peaks

Fournier & Vadovicova King and Queen CBRE Lantau 2 Peaks

HONG KONG, Oct 3. 2021 – The much-anticipated trail season curtain raiser - CBRE Lantau 2 Peaks was back at Lantau Island on 3October (Sunday). For the 23km men category Frenchman Paul Fournier was first across the line in 3 hours 2 minutes 45 seconds with Frenchman Ferdinand Airault 2nd place in a time of 3 hours 12 minutes 41 seconds with Marco Mueller grabbing 3rdin 3 hours 15 minutes 33 seconds.

“Great that Action Asia Events organized this CBRE Lantau 2 Peaks! It’s good to have races back in Hong Kong!  Wasn’t really feeling it this morning as the past few weeks were quite tough at work so kind of felt empty on the start line, but definitely knew that I was lucky to be part of it anyway!  The race started on a fast pace with the other speedsters that you know, quickly understood that it would be necessary to focus on myself and to make sure that I would stay well hydrated! We quickly reached the start of Rescue trail (cable car) with the other guys and the weather was really hot at this moment of the race. I felt fine on the uphill, it was a bit slippery on the wood sections but manageable. Arrived at CP1 alone (in second position), took the time to refill and then head towards Lantau peak climb. Felt great on Lantau peak and the weather was much better (a bit foggy), I knew the coming downhill would be long and it appeared to be also quite hot there… really struggled running downhills today. Anyway, arrived at CP2, tired… but knew the worst was definitely behind me. I gave what I had left in the tank on sunset peak climb and saw Ferdinand. We exchanged few words, cheered each other… Arrived 1st on top of sunset peak and knew that from there it would just be a very (never ending) long downhill and a couple of flat Ks. Lost time going down the stairs (stomach cramps) and started to check what/who was coming behind me until I reached the finish line, obviously satisfied and exhausted. I was so happy to see my teammate Veronika coming 2nd overall! She is just unbelievable! As usual, nice to see some friendly faces from the trail running community at the start and finish. Also, a special thought for the people who weren’t able to finish the race because of the thunderstorms…To conclude, a brutal race where you are constantly switching from using your quads to your harm strings which made it really demanding. Thanks again for such well organised event!” commented overall winner Fournier.

In the Women’s category first across the finish line and 2nd overall on an outstanding trail run was Slovakian national Veronika Vadovicova in an outstanding time of 3 hours 3 minutes 45 seconds with Hong Kong’s Angie Yan Chi Yee taking second in 3 hours 38 minutes 30 seconds and United Kingdom’s Katrina Hamlin taking 3rd in the Women’s in 3 hours 39 minutes 1 second.

At the finish after grabbing the overall Women’s win and 2nd overall in the race,  Vadovicova said “Tried my best and was really hot with many of the strong guys going out probably too fast on first rescue hill climb and believe they felt it on the 2nd half as were slowing down which gave me some extra energy to catch them. Didn’t want anyone to catch me on the downhill (Wong Lung Hang) as just gave it everything as this CBRE Lantau 2 Peaks course suits me as love the struggles with the up and downs. Really enjoyed it,” said overall Women’s winner and 2nd overall Vadovicova.

Majority of all the 15km runners finished the full course and around 40 participants finished the full 23km, but unfortunately the organizer had to cut off the remaining 23km participants at the 16km Pak Kung Au water check point due to bad weather approaching Lantau as didn't want to risk it on the high peaks. Less than 2 hours later weather improved, but unfortunately due to the Covid rules couldn't gather and wait it out and had to send the remaining participants home with majority all saying was the right call as safety first. Timing results for those that were stopped at the second check point at Pak Kung Au will be calculated based on their arrival at that check point showing 16km finishing.

“We were proud to be the title sponsor of CBRE Lantau 2 Peaks. At CBRE, we were truly excited by the return of a physical race as well as the opportunity to be able to play a role in bringing the running community together for an amazing race while supporting a good cause”, said Tom Gaffney, Regional Managing Director, CBRE Hong Kong.

“Over 60 CBRE colleagues, clients and friends participated in today’s event, challenging themselves and bringing their A-game to the race. There is no better way to engage with our colleagues and the wider community than by committing to a well-established endurance race. Once again, we thank our race organizer Action Asia for their relentless efforts in making the race the safest possible by taking all the necessary precautionary measures to ensure the success of the event”, continued Gaffney.

The CBRE  Lantau 2 Peaks course reaches the 2nd and 3rd highest peak of Hong Kong in Lantau Island – Sunset Peak and Lantau Peak covering close to 1900m positive elevation gain and 1900m elevation loss for a 3800m accumulative gain/loss) in 23km with the start finish line located in Tung Chung at sea-level.

For the 23km category runners, they will experience a very tough and difficult hill climbing course that training must be needed. The steep mountain trails are the most strenuous part of the race, that runners can enjoy the magnificent views around.

The event could not happen without the generous support of the title sponsor CBRE and the supporting partners, Action X Store, Watsons Water, Citygate Outlets, Royale International, Herbalgy, New Life Plastics (NLP) and the beneficiary Ocean Recovery Alliance. Recycling bins will be placed in the track for collecting plastic bottles and soft drink cans. This can encourage our participants to contribute to the environment.
