Random training the way for Korzh - Singapore

Random Training by Russian Korzh to benefit for Singapore

I don't recommend new runners repeat my experience and plunge straight into ultra-distances

Interview with Olya Korzh (Q&A session) in preparation for upcoming July 25 MSIG Singapore Action Asia 50

Q1: Tell us about your most memorable race.

A1: A few years ago, in 2008 my friends were running a 50 km night race in Hong Kong. I tagged along as a "team mascot", having no better plans for the Friday night. For me it was just a random thing to do, I didn't think much about it at the time. The deal was that the team would not wait for me if I fell behind as they wanted to place well in the mixed category, and I wasn't even registered for the race. It was really hard for my untrained body, but somehow I just barely managed to keep up. I didn't like it very much at the time. I just didn't want to be left alone in the dark. It was really painful. I think my friends won the mixed that year.

What happened next was that Claus Rolff of Team Green saw a potential in me. He patiently applied coaxing and cajoling and managed to persuade me to run a 100km race with Team Green in the same year. It is a charity race where 4 people must finish the 100 km course together. We did well and hit our under-16 hour target, me being towed by two team mates through the final stages. I must thank Claus and Team Green for taking a chance on me then, sharing their wisdom and providing mentorship and support. I was really lucky.

Q2: Any tips for trail running beginners?

A2: I don't recommend new runners repeat my experience and plunge straight into ultra-distances with almost zero training because it really hurt and it was dangerous. A 10 km or 20 km race would be a better place to start, obviously.

Q3: Do you have any pre-race superstition?

A3: I have no pre-race superstitions, probably because I have stopped worrying about results and numbers. I love racing and if I have a good day, I can do really well and I know it. I am very lucky to train with Coach Ruth Hunt who has tremendous experience and wisdom. I am learning so much from her!

Q4: How would you prepare for the MSIG Singapore Action Asia 50?

A4: My mileage is never very high compare to other runners. I would love to run more, but time and risk of injuries are limitations. I am learning to train smarter instead. Swim squad training 2-4 times a week with coach Lloyd McBean is a fantastic cardio and overall body workout. I get extra nourishment from eating plant-based diet, taking plenty of naps and spending time with very cool people. Squeezy Sports Nutrition keep be fed and 2XU keep me clad, AMO protects my eyes from harmful rays, so I really have very few worries left!!!

Q5: Any goals for the MSIG Singapore Action Asia 50?

A5: I will continue following my training plan designed by Coach Ruth and hope to reach peak form in July for MSIG Singapore Action Asia 50. I know that Action Asia team have been working very hard to bring this race to us, and I am really looking forward to it! Also can't wait to meet new friends in Singapore that share my passion.
