Wai-hei Ng grabs podium in Yunnan and gains altitude training experience

Wai-hei Ng crowned overall champion of Yunnan Action Asia 3 Day Ultra Marathon

Elevation Training at over 3100 meters as part of training for the Skyrunning World Championships in Scotland in September 2018

The 18-year-old student Wai-hei Ng, male winner of MSIG Action Asia Development Programme finished Lijiang Yunnan Action Asia 3 Day Ultra Marathon in in a blistering time of 9 hours 7 minutes and 2 seconds. As part of the training program, the Lijiang Yunnan 3 Day race provided a similar race course at high altitude as the Skyrunning World Championships in Scotland.

Ng shared: “The Day 1 race started on a freezing morning at 7am and running along the mountainside in snow on day 2 was definitely the best part of the course. The day 2 course was shortened because of the bad weather condition with a snow storm causing problems above 3100m, but it was a unique experience to run in the snow. On Day 3, we set off at a hight altitude with over 3000m elevation and it is my first time to race in the snow mountain starting in Sichuan. This amazing training tour offered me a chance to learn how to race smoothly in high mountain and experience a special race which is totally different from any Hong Kong race. The elevation training really helped.”

Sponsored by global general insurer MSIG Insurance (Hong Kong) Limited, the MSIG Action Asia Development Programme is the first of its kind for local Hong Kong trail runners. To qualify for the programme, runners need to be Hong Kong-born and must participate in at least two 50-kilometre races in the 2017/18 MSIG HK50 Series.
