Hard an understatement as cold rain and winds smack Sai Kung 50 in Hong Kong
Hong Kong, February 28, 2026 – The Sai Kung 50, race 4 of the Hong Kong 50 Series, was successfully held Sunday in the Sai Kung East Country Park. Organized by Action Asia Events, the race featured four categories: 13km, 22km, 35km, and 54km, attracting over 400 participants.
Despite particularly challenging weather conditions, with temperatures dropping to 18 degrees Celsius and very slippery trails, many determined runners persevered and successfully completed the race.
The original route for the 54km category looped through the Sai Kung East Country Park, starting and finishing at Pak Tam Chung. The course took runners over Tai Cham Koi, Sai Wan Shan, and required two ascents of Kai Kung Shan, accumulating nearly 3,000 meters of elevation gain. Due to concerns from relevant government departments about potential overcrowding at the High Island Reservoir area, the race organizers adjusted the route following extensive coordination, further increasing the event's difficulty and technical demands.
The course design was varied and challenging. Runners started at sea level, traversing forests, beaches, and coastal trails. The route passed through natural landmarks including Tai Long Wan, Ham Tin Wan, Sai Wan, and Long Ke Wan, requiring competitors to navigate slippery surfaces and technical descents—a true test of both endurance and skills.
The men’s 54km category delivered a completely dominant performance! French runner Arnaud Mauduit (Joint Dynamics / Gone Running) took control of the race from start to finish. Despite torrential rain and trails turned into thick, slippery mud, he calmly described the entire competition as smooth and enjoyable, even relishing the fierce battles with his rivals along the way including one of Hong Kong’s top elites from the Salomon team Wong Kwok Wai on his heals.
Arnaud Mauduit (Joint Dynamics / Gone Running) ultimately crossed the finish line first in an impressive 7 hours 11 minutes 17 seconds for the 54km, successfully defending his title and claiming the championship once again! Close behind, local Hong Kong runner Wong Kwok Wai (黃國威) finished in 7:23:12, followed by Hong Kong local Lau Kam Fai (劉錦輝) in 07:29:06, Belgium national Den Hert Niels in 7:32:37, and Macau national Lao Fong Meng (劉鳳鳴) in 7:41:42, rounding out the top positions.
All five elite athletes agreed afterwards that this year’s Sai Kung 50km course was significantly more challenging: persistent heavy rain made the paths extremely slippery and muddy, greatly increasing the technical demands. Nevertheless, they also praised the stunning scenery along the route and the thrilling sensation of competing shoulder-to-shoulder with strong opponents, making every hard effort feel worthwhile. This tough battle on Hong Kong’s mountain trails tested not only physical endurance but also technical skill on steep ascents and descents, highlighting the resilience and passion of trail runners!
Phipkin Emma (T8) of the United Kingdom secured the 54km title of Women's Champion with an impressive time of 7 hours, 26 minutes, and 57 seconds. Her performance was so strong that it also placed her third overall in the 54km category. "Despite the rain making the course very slippery, the route was incredibly enjoyable, and I'm very happy with the result," Emma commented at the finish line in pouring rain.
Fellow Briton McCreadie Megan claimed second place in the Women’s 54km, battling through heavy rain and cold winds to finish in 10 hours, 14 minutes, and 26 seconds. With a smile, she described the race as "Tough, very difficult."
Hong Kong runner Chan Sin Wa 陳倩華 secured third place in the women's 54km distance with a time of 10 hours, 27 minutes, and 32 seconds. "It was great fun, especially running in the rain! Look at all the mud on my shoes – it was muddy and I was stumbling all over the place, which made it even more fun. I would definitely recommend this Sai Kung 50 race to my friends."
French athlete Verger Margaux finished fourth in the women's 54km category with a time of 11 hours, 22 minutes, and 36 seconds.
The successful execution of this year's event was made possible by the dedication of the judges, volunteers, and staff, many of whom arrived at their posts as early as 2 a.m. to ensure everything ran smoothly. The organizers extend their heartfelt gratitude to all the volunteers and partners who supported the race.
Special thanks go to Bonaqua, Aquarius, Neon Tiger, Corona beer, UFC coconut water, Fitz, Action X Store, ITRA, and Action Asia Sports Academy for their generous support.
