Commitment and motivation is the key

Commitment and motivation key

to family participation at Healthy Hike & Run

HONG KONG, Thursday, March 8, 2019 – It’s the best hiking & trail running season again. As one of the trail runners’ all-time favorite races, the Healthy Hike & Run will be back on March 10, 2019 this Sunday. Sticking with its popular family-friendly format, and to continue to encourage participation from people of all ages and running abilities, the event will once again offer three race categories – 5 km, 13km and 19km – through the beautiful and scenic Tai Lam Country Park.

The Healthy Hike & Run will set off from Tai Tong Shan Road BBQ area, with the 19km runners at 8.30am followed by the rest at 8.50am. After heading into Tai Lam Country Park, the three routes will go separate ways, but all will loop back to the Yuen Tun trail and finish where the race began. The shortest course is family friendly – and has even been won multiple times by kids under 10 – while the two longer courses offer a greater challenge around the scenic Tai Lam Chung Reservoir. For a smooth journey to the race start, there will be shuttle buses from Admiralty, Kowloon Tong and Shatin to the race venue. Free shuttle buses will be provided after the race as well.

Keith Wong, a local trail enthusiast will be participating in the 5km race with his nine-year-old son Joshua. Wong believes trail running has made him healthier and younger: “I have participated in trail running for over 5 years now. My self-confidence and cardiovascular function have been effectively enhanced and improved because of the intermittent participation in long-distance running and trail running. My goal is to enjoy the race and motivate my son to stick with his commitment of the race.”

Another local runner, Jason Y. Ng has just started trail running and registered his first Healthy Hike & Run 19km race. He said: “I am a beginner to trail running, but I discovered that there is an incredible sense of communities among runners. I’ve made so many new friends from races and trainings. It’s been the most rewarding experience.” Speaking of the challenges of trail running, Ng said: “I found the most challenging thing switching from road running to trail running is going up steep hills. Hence, I joined the training workshop of Action Asia Events last week to learn some basic techniques on going up and down hills.”

Japanese runner Arisa Shibayama has signed up for the 19km race and has set a goal for the Sunday race. “I started trail running after I came to Hong Kong and it’s been 2 years already. I found that trail running is more challenging than road running so I mainly do the trail running now. I hope I can complete the race within 3 hours on Sunday,” she said.

The event is organized by Action Asia Events and is possible thanks to the generous support of sponsors: Action X Store, Watsons Water, Banano, SALONSIP, HERBALGY, Hong Kong Living, Royale International and The Green Earth.
