MSIG AA Development plan oversea training race - Karen Cheung

MSIG Action Asia Development Programme oversea training race

-  Malaysia Action Asia 50 Warm up

Get ready for World Skyrunning Championship 2018 update - Karen Cheung

Karen Cheung, the MSIG Action Asia Development Program female winner is confirmed to race in Malaysia Action Asia 50 – warm up on July 15 as the pre-race training for World Skyrunning Championship 2018 in Scotland.

1. Is it your first time doing Malaysia Action Asia race? What do you think you could learn and improve from this race for World Skyrunning Championship?

Yes, it is my first time joining Malaysia event. I hope I can gain more experience and improve my trail running skill at dirt roads / natural road for the World Skyrunning Championship.

2. Malaysia Action Asia 50 is held in Malaysia Janda Baik, where the terrain, weather, and environment are different from Hong Kong. How will you train differently for this race?

I will go out to train during in hot and humid weather with high humidity so that I can get used to the weather in Malaysia.

3. How to balance the daily work and pre-race training?

I am not able to cut down my working hours, but I try to use most of my free time for training or rest and avoid unnecessary socializing activity.

4. Is your state of mind different to race overseas event from the local event?

For the local event, I may have more sense of security, but my mind is also more easily distracted. From the experience I had from MSIG Action Asia Thailand 50 last year, I think I'm more focus during the oversea event but I may be more nervous as there are also more factors that I could not control.

5. What’s your ideal trail running course and distance for beginners? How to deal with the heat and muddy course? Any other advice for them?

I think Hong Kong has a lot of courses that are ideal for beginners, especially in Hong Kong Island, as there are more well-paved cement road or stairs. To deal with the heat and muddy road one must get adequate hydration, and probably need to run slower in order to not over-exhaust oneself. My other advice would be - enjoy every run!

6. What do you think the most challenging factor would be of this race? (E.g, the weather, the muddy course, the elevation, the food, etc.)? How to deal with it?

I guess the most challenging factor would be the weather and the fact that I have never been to Janda Baik which is very similar to me being prepared for the World Skyrunning Championship race as I also have never been to the race venue there.
