Thumbs up for the Hysan Island new course

Lang and Hahn shine at sun-drenched Hysan Island Hike & Run

Perfect autumn conditions enjoyed by participants of all abilities at the new-look event

The Hysan Island Hike & Run 2018 was successfully held this morning at one of Hong Kong’s most beloved country parks only steps away from bustling Causeway Bay, the home base of title sponsors Hysan.

Lang Bin from mainland China was the overall champion of the 23km race around Tai Tam Country Park. Lang, a Hong Kong resident who started trail running two years ago, crossed the finish line at Green Lane Service Reservoir in Happy Valley in 2 hours 20 minutes and 11 seconds.

Lang said: “I really enjoyed the variety on the course. The route has a great combination of flat sections and technical climbs and was overall very challenging. I’m a regular participant of Action Asia Events races and I will also participate in the Lantau 50 on December 2.”

Hong Kong-based German Angelika Hahn claimed the women’s 23km title in 2:47:09. She said: “I liked the course a lot as it’s so close to where I live and I know all the sections very well, so I could pace very well. The scenery was wonderful too with Repulse Bay, Stanley and later a view over the city.”

Sponsored by Hysan, the territory’s leading property investment, management and development company, the second edition of Hysan Island Hike & Run featured a new start/finish line and distance categories. In addition to the 23km, there were also 15km and 6km races.

In the 15km race, Andrea Cloarec from France was the men’s champion in 1:31:53. “I came in second at last year‘s Hysan Island Hike & Run and I’m really happy and satisfied to come first this year. I train in this area very often so I had an advantage. I join a lot of Action Asia Events races and I really enjoy them, and it’s always nice to collect one more trophy.”

The women’s 15km race was won by Australian Kim Matthews in 1:50:17. “I came to Hong Kong four months ago as a speech therapist, and this was my first race in Hong Kong,” said Matthews. “I love the scenery, and I think Hong Kong is such a great place for trail running.”

Rayda Kezaz from France (33:34) was the fastest finisher of the 6km race. He said: “This is my first time doing trail running and my first race, but I’ve always played football and other sports. Now, I’m very motivated to try more of Action Asia Events’ 10-15km trail running races and progress step-by-step.”

Teenager Kimmi Lynn, 13, grabbed the women’s 6km title in 48:56. Lynn was born and raised in Hong Kong, and started trail running when she was 10 years old with her father. She said: “This was my second Hysan Action Asia race and I enjoyed the fun race because of the scenery and the competition in the mountains. My favourite part was the open view of both the city and mountains. I love trail running as it’s not on the roads and we don’t need to avoid cars while running.”

In the new Corporate Team category, Kelvin Day Ellenburger and Adam Shek grabbed the champion of the 6km corporate team in 53 minutes and 48 seconds. “This was our second time joining the event and is our first champion as the corporate team so we are very excited. Adam is a very good runner so he reminds me of when to rest, when to dig deep and how to pace, and I have more experience in hiking so I could remind him of the technical and slippery sections. We had this satisfying result because we helped each other.”

The three categories all headed out towards Tai Tam Country Park before returning to Green Lane. All participants received exclusive dining coupons and gift vouchers as rewards for their efforts.

The Hysan Island Hike & Run was possible thanks to the generous support of Hysan. Special thanks to supporting sponsors Action X Store, C3fit, Hoka One One, Watsons Water, Royale International, ALKA12, Herbalgy, Gatorade, Salonsip, Quaker, Paradise Dynasty, Private i Garden, Alluressories, John Anthony and Action Asia Foundation.
