Sai Kung 50 finishes series with a brutal double on Kai Kung Shan’s 399m peak
HONG KONG, February 11, 2023 – Hong Kong’s Ka Keung 家強 Chan 陳( KC) grabbed the overall win at Saturday’s Sai Kung 50 in association with Goodman playing it careful to secure the overall win in brutal, wet, humid conditions. “The course marking was very clear, easy visually, marshals were great at key intersections, so perfect and easy marking. Temperature was perfect for running, but too foggy at beginning on peaks which I played safe and slowed down as slippery and very high humidity which believed slowed down many. Overall experience was good, weather was great and was happy I finished as quite tired and doing another 50k in a weeks’ time. Hong Kong is a very convenient location to get around to the trails, so recommend our overseas visitors to pay a visit and try our trails. Scenery is great and a fantastic place to train or race” said overall men’s winner Chan finishing the 54km Sai Kung 50 final of the 4 race HK50 series in 6 hours 34 minutes 30 seconds.
Taking the Women’s overall 54 km title was Alice McLeod (Scotland) whose first ever trail race was an Action Asia race 5 yrs ago and has come a long way over the years. “I was thrilled to come first in the HK50 series today with the Sai Kung 50 win. “A beautiful course today, incredibly technical, great atmosphere, but that out and back today (Kai Kung Shan) on the Mac three was just brutal. Very challenging every time as was really, brutal in each direction. But thrilled to have it done. A lot of elevation gain, around 3000m positive gain today, which I will gladly take.” said overall Sai Kung 50 winner and HK50 series overall Women’s winner Alice McLeod who finished in 8 hours 31 minutes 54 seconds.
Close to 400 participants entered the Sai Kung 50 event with 4 distances of 54km, 35km, 22km, 13km which started at Pak Tam Chung,
The Sai Kung 50 organized by Action Asia Events took participants on a circumnavigation of Sai Kung East Country Park, starting at Pak Tam Chung at sea-level, hiking up the 408m summit of Tai Cham Koi, technical descent to Chek Keng at sea-level, trail and beach running along Tai Lo Wan, Ham Tin Wan to Sai Wan, then a climb over Lo Tei Tun at 255m summit, then over Sai Wan Shan (314m elevation) then descending to the beach of Lung Kei Wan, climbing back up to the East Dam and a coast trail run thru Pak Lap arriving back at Pak Tam Chung before the final fun of hiking over Kai Kung Shan (399m) 2x for an out and back finishing at Pak Tam Chung for a total elevation gain of close to 3000m on an extremely technical demanding leg burning course.
The Sai Kung 50 could not have happened without the hard-working marshals, volunteers, staff that got up as early as 3am to make this event happen.
Special thanks to the generous support of the associate sponsor Goodman with extra support by Bonaqua, Action X Store, Royale International, Del Monte, Innocent drinks, ITRA, Auto Camper Battery, Bix Hydration, Gwei-Lo beer, Fitz, C3Fit.
