Gifted kids get to play while main Kayak N Run climbs mountain with record amount of kids out

HONG KONG, May 25, 2019 – Kids faces were in full force during the family category with a record amount of 6-8 years old’s with mom and dad at the annual Kayak n Run by Action Asia Events at Deep Water Bay. Organizers went out of their way to run a separate 3rd event for children recovering from chemotherapy with qualified instructors during the adult longer leg of the kayak and run event with adult teams kayaking roughly 4km around Middle Island before a 5km trail run including a climb to the top of the 430m high Mt Nicholson.

Before the adult teams had their intense battle, family teams had a fun time bright and early event at 7:30 a.m. Organizers went out of their way saying it was not a race and an event that is FUN for the kids involving a 3 km ocean kayak out towards Ocean Park and returning to Deep Water Bay, before a 2 km run course along the Mills & Chung Path hugging the waterfront with splashes of laughter as they navigated their way with nice ocean views and finishing back at Deep Water Bay.

Alex & Charlie (Charlie Carter and Alexander Carter) completed the event and Charlie highly appreciated the event due to the great organization along the route. Charlie said “I haven’t done an Action Asia Event in 15 years and came back now with my 12 year old son Alex and just want to say you’re doing a great job. Love your events and they’re really well organized. I just came back and didn’t train much and first event together with my son and stoked we got 3rd event though yes not a race. Fantastic”. Alexander shared that the course is challenging but like anything if you put your mind to it, results can happen. “If you want to come first you obviously have to do some training. But we want to just do it for fun and didn’t do much training and quite happy” said Alexander Carter.

Another group in family category is PJmarks (Stephen Li and Carpus Li) finished the course in an outstanding time too. His son-Carpus, who is 6-year-old only, tried his best to complete the course and said “the event is fun, interesting and attractive especially the kayak as I liked that section the most.”

The Adult Race started at 8:30am with 4km ocean kayak around Middle Island at Deep Water Bay followed by 5 km trail run with participants navigating on trails by map reading to find the checkpoints to reach the 430m Mount Nicholson before they returned the same way back to the beach finish line.

Team Your Pace or Mine (New Zealander James Park and British Ryan Whelan) was satisfied with their overall winning result in 1 hour 29 minutes 38 seconds with the race highly evaluated due to the magnificent view and challenging course. “The most touching part is that participants are always encouraged to support one another and it is nice and heart-warming. Frankly, this is really a good race and I would definitely recommend this race to my friends,” said James. “The race is wonderful and very challenging, especially the shaggy overgrown trail up Mount Nicholson which we decided to use which had us on the edge pushing ourselves to the limit. When we were on the top of Mount Nicolson, the scenery was amazing and very enjoyable discovering the beauty of Hong Kong” said Whelan.

Team Juggernaut (Australian Cosmo Richards and Canadian Jeremy Ritcey) of 1:37:55, grabbed second place and admitted they were just too slow for the winning boys as they said they had plenty of mishaps. “The hardest place was the stairs from hell. They are called that as they just seem to go on and on and on. I think that’s when I was hurting the most. We caught the 2nd place team at that stage and we were together and just kept pushing and pushing. Fun and best part was the descent. I loved that downhill technical shaggy bush track. It’s just fun. I love it” said Cosmo Richards. “I fell a lot and was clumsy” said Jeremy Ritcey laughing as admitting his fitness wasn’t up to speed after hitting his head, hitting his leg, as was coming back from injury and just some days things like that just happen” Ritcey said. Cosmo added “I have participated this event for four times, last time I think in 2015 and back to the event now since it is very fun, exciting and a big fan of Action Asia Events.

Team Spartan Couple (Magdalena Cvetkovic from Switzerland and British Chris Davis grabbed 3rd overall and 1st place in the Mixed Team category in 1 hour 39 minutes and 53 seconds. "We like both kayaking and trail running because it is full of adventure and extremely exciting. The weather was quite hot, however, I felt very comfortable and refreshing by soaking in the water after the race. The race was interesting and attractive, we will definitely come again” said Cvetkovic.

American Caitlin Johnson and British Victoria Walvin from Team For Fun won the women’s title in 2 hour 10 minute and 02 seconds. "Like our team name “For Fun” we had heard Action Asia Events is fun, and really well done as so much fun. Kayak was hard, but we managed and the trail run to the top of Mt Nicholson (430m) was very hot, but we survived and yes having fun. Looking forward to overseas Kazakhstan and Nepal Action Asia Events".

The Action Asia Kayak N Run Series – Deep Water Bay could not happen without the generous support of Action X Store, Royale International, C3fit, Salonsip, Herbalgy, Lion Rock Brewery, Victoria Recreation Club, Watsons Water, Key Sun Zinke, RID, Lorence & Company and Banano. Special thanks again to VRC who went out of their way supporting Action Asia Events with the kids recovering from chemotherapy as awesome experience again and look forward to partnering again.
