Chan Ka Keung and Wong Wai Hung battle to a tie with Hamlin’s strategy paying off in Women’s field at HK50
HONG KONG, October 25, 2025 – The 15th edition of the HK50 in association with the French International School kicked off Saturday morning as race 1 of the Hong Kong 50 four race series with cool and humid conditions sparking a close nit fought race in the 50km with the help of 24km runners setting a breath taking pace in the 1st half with over 700 participants competing.
It was almost Déjà vu with Hong Kong’s (KC) Chan 陳Ka Keung 家強 (T8/GR_JD) crossing the finish line in a tie for 1st place with Hong Kong’s Wong 黃Waihung 偉雄 (DUO.hk) in the Men’s 50km at the HK50 in a time of 4 hours 49minutes 27 seconds while British national Katrina Hamlin (T8 Gone Running Joint Dynamics Umara) took the Women’s 50km in a blistering pace of 5:22:05. Both men Chan and Wong tied 2 years ago in same race.
“Today the HK50 route was very runnable as so good with early cooler start in dry conditions chasing very fast 24km runners just in front of us and luckily was same as when I tied for 1st in 2023 HK50 as new the course well. It is almost like a sprint for over 35 km on the HK50 and the weather helped a lot as we all pushed each other with Wai Hung and Plato close to each other, but the last 10k was the hardest with humidity and heat rising fast and trying to stay just ahead of Wai Hung until he caught me and then decided last minute not worth trying to kill each other and finish together” said Hong Kong’s Chan 陳Ka Keung 家強 (KC) finished 1st overall together with Wong Wai Hung in 4 hours 49 minutes 27 seconds, just over 12 minutes faster than there win 2 yrs ago with Jeff Campbell.
“Happy to attend the HK50 again after 2 yrs as it is a super-fast course with mostly rolling technical flat sections making it one of the fastest 50km trail races around. We were in a group with Plato, KC, myself pushing each other until cp2 at the half way 24km point, then KC pushed ahead with Plato and me trying to close the gap again and finally saw was within 50m of KC near the climb on Jardine and pushed hard to catch him on the 2nd last big climb with Plato just behind. I asked him do you really want battle each other until nothing is left or finish together. In the end we actually surprised ourselves pushing each other under our previous winning time after agreeing on this as had a faster time so veryy happy with time and result” said joint overall 50km winner Wong Wai Hung.
“Perfect weather as autumn for the HK50, but after 11am everything changed as exposed, got hot and I couldn’t hang on to the other 2, (KC and Wai Hung) but loved the experience as everything else went well.”, said Luk 陸Plato 卓廷 taking 3rd overall in the Men’s 50km putting on a fantastic experience with a very fast time of 5 hours 12 seconds after running most of the day with the joint overall winners. Watch out in the future for this young guy!!
Glen 健豪Yick 易 took 4th overall in the men’s 50km in a time of 05:24:25. “Very happy to join this HK50 race. Luckily, I got the 4th place with receiving $600 cash prize. Very good weather today, very runnable course, kind of like a fast and furious course, nonstop running for 4-5 hours. So pretty enjoyable course and look forward to the next race of the series, Lantau 50 next race in December” said Yick clearly happy with his performance.
Chow 周Hiu Tin 曉天 took 5th overall in the Men’s 50km, “This was my 1st time every joining an Action Asia competition and I liked this HK50 route a lot as I feel like I’m training for a marathon. I will join the next race either this year or early next year for the series. Look forward to doing my best” said Chow.
Katrina Hamlin took the Women’s 50km win in 5:22:05 and placed 4th overall. ”I had a really nice time today as really love this HK50 course as kind of fast, flowy, marathon trail race where you get a nice little hike at the end. You are not supposed to go out too fast in the 1st half, but I thought maybe it would be fun to go out fast and do a positive split and see what happens. Looking forward to coming back another time” said overall Women’s 50km winner Hamlin who clearly liked her strategy with a nice smile.
Second overall in the Women’s 50km was British national Emma Phipkin finishing in 6 hours 6 minutes 59 seconds at the HK50 after pushing herself right to the limit of physical exhaustion after a tough week with little sleep. “Just finished my very first 50km. It was very hard and I mean hard. Very tired. Tough. The people in the front were super quick. Fun race, beautiful course, fast, but Katrina and others in front so fast. I’m wiped.” Said Phipkin after later saying she didn’t sleep well the whole week a week after winning the season opener CBRE Lantau 2 Peaks.
British national Eleanor Gould-Pereira took 3rd place overall in the Women’s 50km in 6:14:39. “Great course again this year. Little bit cool to start, but quite hot conditions to finish. Lead female incredibly fast this year setting a blistering pace. Overall a great course, tough but very rewarding,” said Gould-Pereira making it a 1-2-3 for the British in the Women’s 50km.
Fourth in the Women’s 50km was Chan 陳Hoi Ying 海盈 finishing in a time of 06:56:45.
Wong 黃Yuchit 予婕 took 5th in the Women’s 50km in a time of 07:03:32.
In the Men’s 24km race at the HK50 it was Spanish Daniel Perez (KAILAS FUGA TEAM) taking 1st overall in a time of 01:58:54 ahead of British - Matthew Carey in 2nd in 02:05:55, American Ryan Blair in 3rd in 02:08:50, British Andrew Mcgirr in 4th in 02:09:20 and Australian Jason Jia rounding the podium top 5 in 02:09:28.
In the Women’s 24km race at HK50, Hong Kong’s Lee 李 Tsz Kwan 梓鈞 took the overall win in 02:22:04 while British - Susy Walmsley took 2nd in 02:26:19, Megumi 惠美 Matsui 松井 of Japan took 3rd overall in 02:26:50, American Christine Hughes took 4th in 02:29:43 with Australian Alison Stirling finishing 5th in 02:32:26 rounding out the top 5 Women overall in the 24km distance from the Peak to Wong Nai Chung Gap.
The classic and challenging HK50 course starts from the Peak Galleria (396m) and covers some of the most technical hilly trails along Hong Kong Island. The first 24km follows the Hong Kong Trail from the Peak to Wong Nai Chung Gap, with an additional loop of Mount Bennet in Aberdeen Country Park. The course then becomes more technical and challenging for the 50km runners with a fairly fast and easy trail to Mt Parker Road before contouring the Pak Hong country trail, then a technical and rocky tree routed section contouring the Mt Parker contour trail to the beginning of Boa Vista trail before Quarry Gap Tai Fung Au, Mt Butler (436m), Jardine Lookout (433m), followed by a loop of Violet Hill (438m), finishing at Wong Nai Chung Gap for just over 1400m elevation gain and 1400m elevation loss in the 50km trail race.
The HK50 series is a best out of 4 races choosing the best 3 performances. Winners will have an opportunity to go to the Skyrunning World Championship in 2026.
