Season opener almost here - CBRE Lantau 2 Peaks

Season opener almost here - CBRE Lantau 2 Peaks

Sept 30, 2021 - Hong Kong

For Tom Gaffney of CBRE it’s an opportunity to motivate and inspire. For Salomon Wettstein it’s an opportunity to show what he has been doing during Covid and try to place on the podium. For others, it’s only about finishing the sold-out CBRE Lantau 2 Peaks season opener.

The course may only be 23km, but punches above its weight as a recognized Skyrace distance event with over 1800m of accent, over 1800m of descent climbing over the 2nd and 3rd highest peaks of Hong Kong Lantau Peak and Sunset Peak with an 8 hour cut-off.

“CBRE is made up of a group of energetic and driven individuals who like to challenge themselves both inside and outside of work hours. This year, we are delighted to be the title sponsor of Action Asia’s CBRE Lantau 2 Peaks Race in support of Ocean Recovery Alliance, an organization focusing on programs that reduce plastic pollution, both on land and water. At CBRE, we are committed to promoting fitness and mental wellbeing among our colleagues as well as supporting like-minded non-profit organizations in driving sustainable initiatives for our next generation, and we are very glad that Action Asia shares the exact same goals, said Tom Gaffney, Regional Managing Director, CBRE Hong Kong.

“We are very fortunate to be able to participate in a physical race with stringent precautionary measures in place, as Hong Kong makes great strides in economy recovery and people resume their normal way of life. We thank Action Asia Events, our colleagues, clients and friends of CBRE as well as all the other racers for complying with all the measures to make this hiking event the safest possible for everyone,” said Gaffney.

Salomon Wettstein who has been on the podium previously with a finishing time of 2hrs 57 min to earn 3rd place in 2019 is one of the favorites at this year’s CBRE Lantau 2 Peaks.  “Last two years were difficult for all runners in HK having only a few races to compete in. My last race was at the end of 2019. On the other hand, it helped me to build a stronger base with much higher volume due to no travel, more time at home and a mindset to run every day to stay resilient in my leadership position running a company. Yes, living in Lantau helps as you to get used to the long climbs up Lantau and Sunset peak. I know the trails very well and I feel comfortable on the terrain. I still try to avoid the cable car route on the slippery wooden steps, the only trail on Lantau that I don’t like.”

When asked about advice to others Wettstein offered some important advice. “The distance of both races (15km & 23km) seems short and many runners go out too hard at the beginning. It’s still end of summer with a high risk to getting dehydrated half-way thru. Recommend trying to stay patient and don’t push too hard on the first climb, as it’s essentially 3 climbs for the 23k route. The last downhill is long going down Wong Lung Hang (800m elevation to sea-level), and you want to save your legs up Sunset peak to be able to push hard on that long downhill followed by a 2k flat sprint. Most important: stay hydrated! Keep drinking water, as much as you can. A few gels are enough in terms of energy for me, but you need to drink much more than you would normally do given you’ll be fully exposed to the sun on the peaks. Take some salt tablets with you or anything else that helps you in case you end up cramping.”

Let the season begin and let’s hope this is the start of more events to come.
