Hong Kong’s Chan battles it out with Swiss national Wettstein until last kilometer while Chau takes 18km Women’s trail race - Action Sprint Sai Kung – Race 1 of series
HONG KONG, April 14, 2024 – The unexpected increase in humidity together with higher temperatures added to the suffering while Swiss national - Wettstein and Hong Kong’s Chan 陳Chi Keung 自強 battled it out until the last kilometer of the 18km Action Sprint Trail race at Sai Kung – (race 1 of the 3 race 2024 series) with Hong Kong’s Chau Ching Lam grabbing the Women’s 18km win.
“Oh man, did 18k. Freakin hot today and humid. Super-fast Sprint race. Very strong competitors. Happy to finish strong with the 1st place today as only realized in last 2km I had a chance to pull Chan in and got by him in final kilometer. Really, nice course. I live nearby in Sai Kung and love it and my boy loves it too. Thank you so much again and great race. Peace” said Wettstein (UGLOW team), the overall Men’s 18k Action Sprint winner finishing in 1 hour 30 minutes 54 seconds.
Second overall just 30 seconds behind in the Men’s 18k was Jason Chan 陳Chi Keung 自強 (TPH team). “My name is Jason Chan and I am a member of the Peak Hunter team. Humidity was very high today as brutal. I started to fast, paid the price as in the last kilometer of the race still leading Salomon got by, passed me and lost by 30 seconds. So I guess I better train harder!”, said Chan a little disappointed, but happy with performance in a challenging flat out 18km sprint on a technical challenging multi-terrain course who finished in 1 hour 31 minutes 24 seconds.
Overall winner in the Women’s 18km was Irene Chau 周Ching Lam 靜琳. My name is Irene and very happy and surprised that I came in first. Me and some friends just decided last week to enroll. This should be the last race of this season for me as getting hot. Thank you so much for the organizer Action Asia as today was very hot and well organized and the volunteers were great. Thanks so much again as maybe will see if will race again’ said overall Women’s 18km winner Chau who finished in 2 hours 10 minutes 48 seconds.
UK’s Olivia Brocklehurst grabbed 2nd just over 4 minutes later behind Chau in 2 hours 15 minutes 3 seconds in the Women’s 18 km. Thanks so much for the racing today as really great race. Hot, toughest climate conditions I’ve had since this time last year, but really fun as always a great event, great snacks along the route, really needed those oranges at the 2nd checkpoint so thank you Action Asia, said Brocklehurst at the finish line.
